This is the second SmartWool zip T I have bought. I also bought my backpacking son one. He wears his in the mountains; I wear mine in San Francisco to sightsee in the summer. (Rmember Mark Twain's comment: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.")

I bought this on sale at Eastern Mountain Sports and now consider it essential for winter running and snowshoeing. Here is why:
1. Over the years I have discovered that less is more when it comes to staying warm in the winter. Wearing something that is thin and light,wicks moisture away, and breathes well, keeps me warmer than a heavier garment without these qualities. This product does it all, plus it is not itchy, and fits snugly but not too tight.
2. This product is advertised as not smelling even when drenched with sweat (like after a long run). This claim is 100% true. It's amazing that after I hang it up to dry, I still smell nothing. As a result, instead of having to wash it after a two hour run, I can now do a few runs before I wash it.
3. I have read a negative review complaining about shrinkage after washing, but I have not experienced that problem. I own lots of wool products, and know that you have to be careful when washing to avoid shrinkage. I wash this with my other wool products using Woolite on a warm/cold delicate cycle and then air dry it. It comes out just fine.
Bottom line: Even though this is wool, it is not itchy, is very comfortable to wear, and is incredibly warm as a base layer. I especially like not having the gym locker room smell when I am done running. This is one of my favorite base layers for the winter.

Over the years I've purchased several Smartwool zip tops and they have been excellent, but this year I purchased another and it got quite a bit smaller after washing. I returned it and was given a replacement, but that also got smaller. Don't know what is going on, but quality seems to be slipping and considering the price, that is a big issue. Wash/dry was done according to directions.
